Report: Padres have offered Weaver deal to lead starting staff
The San Diego Padres have taken a thrifty approach to building a starting rotation throughout the offseason thus far, signing Jhoulys Chacin, Clayton Richard, and Trevor Cahill to identical one-year contracts worth $1.75 million.
San Diego has apparently made another free-agent pitcher, Jered Weaver, an offer, although the value would be higher, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports reports.
The Padres have been linked to the former Los Angeles Angels ace since mid-December, and if signed, would lead the San Diego staff, according to Heyman.
Weaver, 34, finished in the top three in American League Cy Young voting in 2011 and '12, when he won a combined 38 games, but has watched his ERA rise every season since amid decreasing velocity.
SEASON | GS | W-L | ERA | IP | SO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2011 | 33 | 18-8 | 2.41 | 235.2 | 198 |
2012 | 30 | 20-5 | 2.81 | 188.2 | 142 |
2013 | 24 | 11-8 | 3.27 | 154.1 | 117 |
2014 | 34 | 18-9 | 3.59 | 213.1 | 169 |
2015 | 26 | 7-12 | 4.64 | 159 | 90 |
2016 | 12-12 | 31 | 5.06 | 178 | 103 |
Weaver would potentially head up a rotation featuring four others from a group of Chacin, Richard, Cahill, Christian Friedrich, Paul Clemens, Luis Perdomo, and Tyrell Jenkins, who could all compete for spots in spring training.
San Diego's starting staff owned a 4.61 ERA - good for 10th in the NL - pitching in the friendly confines of Petco Park last season.
Over the course of his career, Weaver has scripted a 150-93 record with a 3.55 ERA during 322 starts.
