Ramos: We need Madrid fans behind us, not kicking us when we're down

Jeers and whistles aimed at Real Madrid players aren't uncommon at the Santiago Bernabeu when the team is struggling.

Even Cristiano Ronaldo isn't immune to the ire of a home support that's developed a short fuse after decades of setting the standard for success in club football.

For all the trophies he's helped the club win, and his recent string of personal achievements, whistles rained down on the Portuguese star once again Saturday before Sergio Ramos' brace helped Real return to winning ways with a 2-1 triumph over Malaga.

Ramos - who scored an own goal during Real's first loss in 41 matches against Sevilla last week - conceded that he understands the motivation behind the cries from the stands, but explained that jeers don't often produce the desired result on the pitch.

"I've always said that we can never change the Bernabeu," Ramos told reporters after the match, according to ESPNFC. "I've spent many years here and like Marcelo said after the (Copa del Rey) game the other day, all of the great players have been whistled here at some point. It's a wake-up call to make the team respond.

"But it's in the difficult moments that we need them to be behind us, not kicking us when we are down.

"We know how our fans are and we like the way they are. The objective is that we all take this forward together."

The victory over Malaga helped Real retain its place atop the table as Zinedine Zidane's men will now look to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-final when they visit Celta Vigo on Wednesday.
