Jerome Miron / USA TODAY Sports

Texas bolstered its defense in a big way on Friday, as the No. 1 junior college linebacker in the country Gary Johnson committed to the Longhorns.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder is ranked by ESPN as the 8th-best overall prospect in the junior college class of 2017, and will immediately help Tom Herman's defense with his speed and athleticism.

According to Wescott Eberts of Burnt Orange Nation, Johnson has been timed at 4.26 in the 40-yard dash, and has hit 39.4 inches with his vertical leap.

Johnson was being courted by a number of Power 5 programs including Alabama, Oregon, USC, Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State and LSU before choosing to play for Texas.
