The Houston Astros avoided arbitration with right-hander Mike Fiers on Thursday after agreeing to a one-year, $3.45-million deal, the team announced.

The deal represents a middle ground between the two sides. Fiers, who was in his first year of arbitration eligibility, apparently asked for $3.9 million, while the Astros originally countered with $3 million.

Fiers went 11-8 with a 4.48 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 134 strikeouts across 168 2/3 innings last season while earning $524,100.
