Trump to name Jets owner Johnson as ambassador to UK

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

President-elect Donald Trump will name New York Jets owner Woody Johnson as the United States' ambassador to the United Kingdom, a transition team official confirmed, according to CNBC.

Trump made comments at a luncheon earlier Thursday that suggested Johnson would fill the role.

Johnson endorsed Trump for president in May 2016 and previously donated to other Republican presidential nominees, including John McCain and Mitt Romney.

The 69-year-old purchased the Jets in January 2000.

Steelers owner Dan Rooney served as the ambassador to Ireland from 2009-12 during Barack Obama's presidency.
