Southampton failed in its bid to procure Mamadou Sakho from Liverpool after the Merseyside club rejected a proposed loan move to St Mary's Stadium.

As the club prepares for the possible departure of wantaway defender Jose Fonte, Southampton is believed to have reached out to Liverpool in an effort to acquire the French centre-back on loan before being turned away, sources told Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports.

Instead, it's understood that Liverpool is eager to cut ties with Sakho and will only consider permanent offers.

Sakho has failed to appear in a match all season after allegedly breaking team rules, which led to a spat with manager Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

Along with Southampton, Swansea and Spanish side Sevilla have also been linked with a move for the 26-year-old.

However, Liverpool's valuation could price some teams out of the running, as the club has reportedly placed a £20-million price tag on a player who has not played a competitive club match since April 2016.
