CFP chair insists Ohio State has no advantage with AD appointment

Fans shouldn't worry about Ohio State receiving an unfair advantage following the appointment of athletic director Gene Smith to the College Football Playoff committee, CFP's executive director says.

"Committee members have no effect on their own teams because they are recused from all discussion and voting when their teams are involved," Bill Hancock told Heather Dinich ESPN. "In fact, we took the additional step of (Clemson athletic director) Dan (Radakovich) being recused in discussions of teams that might become Clemson's opponent. The recusal policy is roughly the same as NCAA sports' committees, but ours is a little more restrictive."

Legendary Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer will also be recused when discussing the Hokies.

Hancock said Smith will not even have the option of voting for Ohio State, as the Buckeyes' logo will be shaded gray and un-clickable on his computer.

Smith, Beamer, and Robert Morris president Chris Howard were added to the selection committee Tuesday, replacing Barry Alvarez and Condoleezza Rice, whose three-year terms expired, and Lloyd Carr, who stepped down for health reasons.
