Northern Michigan left guard Anthony Herbert died Tuesday after suffering a medical emergency following a morning team workout.

He was 20.

Herbert attended breakfast in the school dining hall following the workout before returning to his dorm room, where he suffered a medical emergency, according to Justin P. Hicks of Mlive.com, citing officials.

"What caused his passing is unknown at this time and right now our concern is for Anthony's family, friends, teammates, coaches and team staff, teachers and fellow students," Northern Michigan president Fritz Erickson said in a statement.

The school released a statement on its athletics website Tuesday to announce Herbert's death.

"In my brief time with Anthony, I could tell that he was a great young man," head coach Kyle Nystrom said. "He was well respected by his coaches and teammates and was a leader on the offensive line. We are devastated by this tragedy, and we are keeping his family in our prayers."

Aside from his on-field accomplishments, which included starting every single game for the Wildcats last season, Herbert received all-GLIAC academic team honors during the 2016 fall semester.
