Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will replace Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez on the College Football Playoff selection committee, sources told ESPN's Heather Dinich on Friday.

Alvarez is one of three members remaining from the original committee in 2014, joining Condoleezza Rice and Bobby Johnson. Those three will all need to be replaced as their terms on the committee have come to an end.

Smith has been the Buckeyes athletic director since 2005, and has also spent five seasons on the men's basketball committee for the NCAA tournament. He attended Notre Dame in the 1970s and was a member of the Fighting Irish's national championship side in 1973.

Ohio State has qualified in two of the CFP's three seasons thus far, and with Urban Meyer at the helm, are bound to be in the conversation most years going forward. Having a committee member as the athletic director of a CFP team would be nothing new, however, as Clemson's Dan Radakovich has been on the committee the past two seasons, with the Tigers qualifying both times.
