Former Baltimore Ravens president David Modell died Friday afternoon at the age of 55 after a two-year battle with cancer, the team announced.

Modell served as president from 1996-2004, presiding over the Ravens' Super Bowl win in 2000.

The son of former Cleveland Browns and Ravens owner Art Modell, David was instrumental in building the current franchise.

He helped decide the Ravens' colors and name, hired Super Bowl-winning head coach Brian Billick, and coordinated the move to M&T Bank Stadium in 1998.

"Our No. 1 goal is to win. This oversimplification cannot be re-stated often enough. It shapes every decision and action this organization takes," he said early in his tenure. "I don't want us just to be the best football team. We aspire to be the best business organization. We want to set the standard on and off the field."
