Hughes starts strong at Sony with 2-under 68

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Mackenzie Hughes fired the same score Thursday that he finished the SBS Tournament of Champions with on Sunday, carding a two-under-par 68 at the Sony Open.

Hughes began his round at the par-4 10th, making an 11-foot putt for birdie before bogeying the 13th hole when he drove the ball into the left rough. The Dundas, Ontario, native responded with a birdie at the par-5 18th, where he hit the green with his second and two-putted for birdie to make the turn in 34.

On his closing nine, Hughes made three birdies and a bogey, and came to his finishing hole - the par-5 9th - looking to add another low score on the card. He found the fairway bunker off the tee and was unable to make an 8-footer for par, leading to his third bogey of the round.
