5 potential name changes if Chargers rebrand in L.A.

Jake Roth / USA TODAY Sports

It's not often the public gets to dream up new uniforms and logos for an NFL team.

The last time an entirely new football team formed was in 2002 when the Houston Texans were born. Since then, only a handful of teams have altered uniforms or overhauled their look.

Should the Chargers choose to do the same in lockstep with their reported move from San Diego to Los Angeles, there is no shortage of possible looks or team names.

Here are five options:

Los Angeles Stars

The ties are easy. Getting clearance to use such a name and logo wouldn't be. The Dallas Cowboys own jurisdiction on the star logo, so the new Los Angeles team would have to use another interpretation of the word as their emblem.

Los Angeles Lightning

It rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? The team doesn't have to deviate too far from it's current look. Heck, it could probably keep the logo, but a move to L.A. might necessitate a new nickname. The NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning have already made the name cool and set a precedent.

Los Angeles Express

Once upon a time, a USFL football team made Los Angeles its home and it went by the name of the Los Angeles Express. The team once signed Steve Young to a then-record $40-million contract. The quarterback would later have to buy out of his own contract to move to the NFL.

Los Angeles Tide

Hey, it sounds better than "Waves" or "Ripples" or "Crustaceans."

Los Angeles Earthquakes

The Earthquakes of the MLS call San Jose home, but the NFL could play the heavy and push its little brother to be a lenient with the name.
