The Carolina Panthers are expected to replace outgoing defensive coordinator Sean McDermott with assistant head coach Steve Wilks, Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Wilks also coached the team's secondary and therefore would represent a familiar face to the defense as a whole.

McDermott was named the head coach of the Buffalo Bills on Wednesday.

The Panthers ranked 21st in total defense this season. The secondary lost Josh Norman and welcomed aboard three rookies to fill his spot. As a result the Panthers finished the year 29th in pass defense.

The year prior, Carolina was 11th in that category.
