Canada announces squad for January training camp

Canada men's national team head coach Michael Findlay has called up 28 players to participate in a training camp running from Jan. 12-18, with a number of young players getting the nod as the team builds toward the future.

Orlando City newcomer Will Johnson is the sole call-up from the Lions as Cyle Larin was omitted from the team due to injury. Toronto FC's veteran trio of Jonathan Osorio, Ashtone Morgan, and Tosaint Ricketts were joined by youngsters Jay Chapman, Mo Babouli, Jordan Hamilton, and Raheem Edwards.

Five members of the Vancouver Whitecaps received call-ups, with the Montreal Impact also sending two of its players to the camp.

Canada failed to qualify for the final round of CONCACAF 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying - a stage known as "The Hex" as it features the final six teams in the region - and, as such, the Canadian national team will not have much meaningful competition to look forward to in 2017.

But, with one eye on the 2020 FIFA World Cup, this younger-skewing team is perhaps the foundation of future prosperity, and with Canada tipped among the favourites to host the 2026 World Cup, many of these players' international adventures could be starting in this camp.
