Sporting Kansas City signs Dykstra

Sporting Kansas City continued its busy Tuesday of roster development, signing goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra to a one-year contract with an option for the 2018 season. The move comes after the club acquired his rights in the 2016 MLS Re-Entry Draft in December.

Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes explained the signing came as a result of the team losing its own backup 'keeper Alec Kann in the Expansion Draft, stating he "wanted to fill that role with a veteran of MLS."

He's found just that in the 31-year-old shot-stopper who previously played for D.C. United as backup to Bill Hamid, though he has been limited to just 31 regular-season appearances over the last seven years.

Still, Vermes knows Dykstra can be a valuable addition to his ranks.

"Andrew is a player who was available in the Re-Entry Draft and one who we know very well from his time in the league," he said in a statement. "He has a good attitude and we look forward working with him this coming season."

The 6-foot-4 netminder will have to compete with starting goalkeeper Tim Melia, as well as young newcomer Adrian Zendejas, who was promoted out of the team's USL affiliate Swope Park Rangers earlier in the offseason.
