Westbrook finishes 2016 with 31 triple-doubles

Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

If Russell Westbrook was going to play basketball on New Year's Eve, then there was only one way for him to logically end 2016. The Oklahoma City Thunder star went for 17 points, 14 assists, and 12 rebounds to record his 31st regular-season triple-double of the calendar year.

The Thunder thumped the injury-riddled Los Angeles Clippers 114-88, with Oklahoma City moving to 13-3 this season when Westbrook hits double-digits in points, dimes, and boards. The 31 triple-doubles are second all-time in a calendar year to Oscar Robertson.

Robertson, of course, is the last NBA player to average a triple-double over the course of a season - the mark Westbrook is currently chasing - accomplishing the feat in 1961-62.

GP PTS REB AST
Oscar Roberson 1961-62 79 30.8 12.5 11.4
Russell Westbrook 2016-17 34 30.9 10.5 10.7

The Thunder are entering a tough part of their schedule as 2017 dawns, however, with the team hitting the road for 12 of their 15 games in January.
