Report: Orioles discussing multi-year deal with Castillo

With a reunion between the Baltimore Orioles and Matt Wieters appearing highly unlikely, the club's front office has shifted its focus to one of the most recent names to land on the free-agent market.

The Orioles have reportedly had continued negotiations with catcher Welington Castillo, according to Dan Connolly of Baltimore Baseball, who adds there's optimism that a multi-year deal could be reached.

Castillo was a victim of cash cutting in Arizona as the Diamondbacks opted to non-tender him earlier this month, rather than pay the projected $5.9 million he was set to earn through arbitration.

The 29-year-old would be a solid addition for the Orioles. He hit .264/.322/.423 with 14 home runs, 24 doubles, 68 RBIs and 121 strikeouts in 113 games with Arizona in 2016.

Castillo has averaged 15 home runs and a .727 OPS per year over the last three seasons. The Orioles, meanwhile, received 18 homers and a .644 OPS from their catchers last year.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves are also reportedly interested in Castillo, though the Rays may no longer be an option after agreeing to a two-year deal with Wilson Ramos.
