The NFL's investigation into several alleged acts of domestic violence by Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott is still "active and ongoing," the league told ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio.

The league is investigating five alleged incidents from July as well as one from February involving Elliott and a former girlfriend. The NFL can't punish Elliott for the latter regardless of what it discovers because he was not yet drafted, but may use its assessment of that case to help resolve possible credibility issues that affect the July incidents.

Florio says that it "seems unlikely" that the NFL will resolve the case until the offseason, and notes that the league has no deadline for its decision.

Elliott's camp said in November that the running back is viewed as "public enemy No. 1" by league investigators. The rookie, who currently leads the league in rushing yards, has consistently denied the allegations, characterizing them as an ex-girlfriend's attempt to smear him.
