Report: Nationals making push for Jansen

After closer Aroldis Chapman came off the board late Wednesday thanks to a five-year, $86-million agreement with the New York Yankees, Kenley Jansen suddenly became the most wanted man on the free-agent market, reportedly receiving a five-year offer of his own from the Miami Marlins.

Early Thursday morning, the Washington Nationals surfaced as potential competition for the services of the 29-year-old right-hander, according to sources of FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Along with the Nationals and Marlins, Jansen is also reportedly being pursued by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the only organization he's known throughout his major-league career.

The Nationals have been busy at the winter meetings, trading for outfielder Adam Eaton while involving themselves in strong negotiations surrounding left-hander Chris Sale - before he went to the Boston Red Sox - and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen.

Jansen remains the top reliever on the open market, and will likely command a contract greater than the four-year, $62-million deal received by Mark Melancon when he signed with the San Francisco Giants, although it's presumed he'll receive less than Chapman, despite having similar numbers.

PLAYER IP SV SVO ERA SO WAR
Aroldis Chapman 58 36 39 1.55 90 2.7
Kenley Jansen 68 2/3 47 53 1.83 104 3.2
Mark Melancon 71 1/3 47 51 1.64 65 1.8

Jansen finished the 2016 campaign with 47 saves, a 1.83 ERA, and a 13.6 strikeout-per-nine innings rate.

Over the course of his career in the bigs, the converted catcher owns a 2.20 ERA to go along with 189 saves in 409 appearances.
