Stanford's McCaffrey declares for NFL draft

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey will bypass his senior season and enter the 2017 NFL Draft, he announced Wednesday.

"Since I was 6 years old, I've wanted to play in the NFL," he wrote in a letter posted on the team's website. "It's been on every list of goals that I've ever written. Now, it's time to take that step. There's nothing more I can put on film."

Presumably, McCaffrey will wait until after the Sun Bowl to file the official paperwork, leaving him eligible to play against North Carolina on Dec. 30.

The star junior rushed for 1,603 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, after posting 2,019 yards and eight touchdowns last year - and that's just on the ground.

McCaffrey, known for his extreme versatility, is one of the nation's top pass catchers out of the backfield, and has also excelled as a returner on special teams. Last year, McCaffrey tallied 3,864 all-purpose yards, breaking the NCAA single-season record previously held by the legendary Barry Sanders.

The 6-foot, 200-pounder is generally projected as a borderline first-round pick, with explosiveness being the lone question mark he'll need to answer in the months leading up to the draft.
