Chargers discussing deal to play at L.A. Coliseum for 2017 season

The San Diego Chargers could be playing at the iconic Los Angeles Coliseum for the 2017 season.

After San Diego voters rejected a $1.8-billion stadium proposal in November, the Chargers are actively exploring their options for next season.

"In light of the vote of the people of San Diego, it's back on the table in earnest," L.A. Coliseum Commission President Mark Ridley-Thomas said to USA TODAY's Brent Schrotenboer. "So the appropriate amount of due diligence continues to be done, and we will see if in fact we can strike a deal."

The Chargers face a Jan. 15 deadline on whether they'd share a stadium with the Los Angeles Rams at a facility that is expected to be completed by 2019. Chargers owner Dean Spanos said in November that no decision on the team's prospective relocation would be made until the regular season concludes.

However, the Chargers and the Coliseum appear to be accelerating discussions.

"Earnest conversations are underway among the respective parties," Ridley-Thomas said. "This is a matter that needs to be given very serious attention. The commission has the capacity to move quickly should it be required to do so."
