Three Duke players outscore entire Florida team

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Basketball is a sport played five-on-five, but Duke only needed three players to knock off Florida 84-74 on Tuesday.

With the Blue Devils still without freshmen phenom Harry Giles at full health, and standout scorer Grayson Allen nursing a toe injury, the supporting cast took over in a massive way against the Gators.

Luke Kennard, Amile Jefferson, and Jayson Tatum combined to score 75 points on the night, while Florida managed just 74 as a team.

Here's more on the terrifying trio from Tuesday:

Luke Kennard

With elite scoring skills and a trash-talking game to match, Kennard would be the star on almost every team in the country. Despite being a highly-touted recruit in 2015, the 6-foot-6 guard somehow got lost in the shuffle with Allen returning and the four-star freshman coming to campus. His last two games have served as a reminder that he's as good as anyone on the Blue Devils when he's on. After a 35-point night on Saturday against Maine, Kennard followed that up with a 29-point show against the Gators.

Amile Jefferson

Jefferson set a new career high with 20 points on Saturday against Maine, and just 72 hours later, shattered that mark with a 24-point effort. The fifth-year senior made a remarkably efficient 11-of-14 from the field, and also added a whopping 15 rebounds for the cause. He and Kennard combined for 31 points at halftime, matching the entire Gators team output for the first 20 minutes. Jefferson isn't expected to be a big scorer for the Blue Devils, but showed Tuesday that he's more than willing to fill the hoop when needed.

Jayson Tatum

Tatum was the third-ranked player in the country for the 2016 recruiting class, and already has pro scouts drooling over his NBA skills and size. After missing the first part of the season with a foot injury, Tatum returned on Saturday versus Maine in limited action, but Tuesday was his coming out party. Coming off the bench for the Blue Devils, the 6-foot-8, 225-pounder hit on 7-of-11 shots from the field, and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. His game is a throw-back to Carmelo Anthony's days at Syracuse, as evidenced by this mid-post stepback.

Takeaway

It's probably safe to cancel the NCAA tournament in March and just award Duke the trophy now. Giles, the No. 1 recruit in the country, warmed up before the game, signalling he's almost ready to return from knee surgery. Once everyone is at full strength, Duke can trot out a seven-man lineup of Giles, Jackson, Allen, Marques Bolden, Kennard, Tatum, and Jefferson. Good luck to the rest of the country with that.
