Ball bets 1st edition: Use the 'luck of the Irish' to pad the bank account

With the college basketball season now a month old, there's enough of a sample size on teams to start laying some wagers and bring in some extra cash.

Here is the best bets from a stacked Saturday slate in the world of college hoops.

Best bets

Villanova vs. Notre Dame (+6)

Two of the nine remaining teams in the country meet Saturday for a neutral site game in New Jersey when Villanova and Notre Dame square off. The Fighting Irish are sixth in the country in offensive efficiency and first in both free throw and turnover percentage. The defending national champion Wildcats are an excellent defensive squad and can also put points up, so expect a high-scoring affair. Notre Dame's offense keeps this one close enough for the cover. Villanova 83, Notre Dame 79

*Game will be played in Newark, N.J.

Arizona State (+8.5) at San Diego State

It's been four days and it's still hard to forget how terrible Arizona State looked against Purdue on Tuesday.

Head coach Bobby Hurley absolutely ripped his team after getting stomped by 33, and if they can't respond to those comments on Saturday, it's gonna be a long year in Tempe. The Sun Devils are usually a high-powered offense, ranking 41st in the nation at 82.7 points per game, while San Diego State sits 221st at 72.3 points per contest. The Aztecs are tough at home, but Arizona State rebounds in a big way. Arizona State 76, San Diego State 74

La Salle vs. Georgetown (-3)

Georgetown seems to have a double personality as a team this season, but are currently riding a three-game winning streak, so let's hit 'em while they're hot. La Salle put forth a strong effort in a mid-week loss to No. 1 Villanova, and are sure to suffer a letdown of sorts after such a pressure-packed game. Georgetown 84, La Salle 75

*Game will be played in Miami, Fla.

Home 'Dog of the Week'

Wichita State at Oklahoma (+6.5)

Life after Buddy Hield hasn't been terrible for Oklahoma, who sit 6-2 on the season, but the Sooners looked atrocious in a 20-point loss at Wisconsin two games ago. Wichita State will represent their toughest opponent other than the Badgers to date this season, but the Sooners as a home underdog is very appealing. The game isn't on campus, being played at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, but it might as well be a home game for the Sooners. Oklahoma 76, Wichita State 73

*The Home 'Dog of the Week' is a moneyline win for a home underdog playing on Saturday.

Full-day parlay

1:00 p.m. ET - UAB at Memphis (-4.5)

Let's rely on Tubby Smith and Memphis to get the day off to a winning start at home over UAB. The Tigers are 5-0 on the campaign at home, and the Blazers are playing just their second true road game of the season. Memphis 85, UAB 73

5:30 p.m. ET - Utah at Xavier (-10)

Nobody is happier to be home than Xavier, after the Musketeers dropped back-to-back road games at Baylor and Colorado. A return to Cincinnati will help Xavier get back in the win column against a Utah team playing its first true road game of the year, leading to win No. 2 on the parlay. Xavier 81, Utah 65

8:00 p.m. ET - VCU (-2) at Old Dominion

VCU has hit a rough patch, dropping two straight games, but will rebound with a road win at Old Dominion on Saturday. The Monarchs rank 155th in the country, turning the ball over 13.5 times per game, which is never good against the VCU pressure defense.

*The full-day parlay offers a pick from one early game, one mid-afternoon game, and one night game on Saturday. The idea is to take the winnings from game one and place them on game two, and do the same for game three.
