Nearly three weeks after his latest suspension reached the one-year mark, Aldon Smith has yet to receive a decision on his application for reinstatement.

As things currently stand, the NFL doesn't appear to be in much of a rush, either.

The Oakland Raiders linebacker wants to speak with commissioner Roger Goodell in regard to a potential return, but a meeting between the two hasn't been scheduled, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

With just four regular-season games remaining beyond this week, Rapoport cites a feeling among sources that it's unlikely Smith is permitted to rejoin the Raiders this season.

Smith, a former first-round pick, was cut by the San Francisco 49ers last August after an off-field incident led to charges of DUI, hit and run, and vandalism.

He landed with the Raiders in advance of the 2015 regular-season opener and went on to suit up for nine games before the second substance-abuse suspension of his career was officially handed down.

A recent report from ESPN's Adam Schefter indicated that, after a 120-day rehab stint over the summer, there was "guarded optimism" within the Raiders organization that he'd be cleared to play again this season.

Oakland will presumably continue to hold out hope in that regard but, as team officials have said publicly throughout the process, Rapoport adds that they aren't counting on his return.

Smith was one of the NFL's premier pass-rushers for the majority of his four-year run with the 49ers, racking up an impressive 44 sacks across 50 games.
