Report: Giants, Nationals make 4-year offers to Melancon

Free-agent closer Mark Melancon is on the verge of a significant payday, as the front office representatives for all 30 major league teams assemble in Maryland on Sunday for the winter meetings.

While there's no shortage of teams looking for bullpen help, the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals are reportedly at the forefront of those pursuing Melancon, sources told Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

The three-time All-Star has received offers from the Giants, Nationals, and perhaps another team in the range of four years, $60 million, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, who adds the Giants' bid is believed to be the strongest.

The Nationals are certainly familiar with Melancon, after acquiring him from the Pirates at the non-waiver trade deadline in August. He posted a 1.82 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in 29 appearances for Washington, converting 17 saves.

After Giants' relievers combined to blow an MLB-worst 30 saves last season, the front office made it clear that they would be aggressive in trying to add a premium closer this winter. Melancon certainly fits what they're looking for, with his 1.80 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 147 saves over the last four seasons.
