Dungy supports Taggart in speaking with Oregon officials

Logan Bowles-USA TODAY Sports

South Florida head coach Willie Taggart has been the subject of rumors surrounding the vacant head coaching position at Oregon, and he now seems to have one particular coaching legend in his corner.

Former NFL head coach Tony Dungy voiced his support of Taggart and the possibility of making the move to Oregon, according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN. Dungy reportedly spoke to Oregon officials on Taggart's behalf, having seen him up close while his son Eric played for Taggart at South Florida in 2014.

"I certainly think he's a good fit," Dungy said Saturday. "I had a chance to watch him coach a year when my son played there. I liked his style. I think he's a guy that can relate to the players very well."

Since taking over at South Florida in 2013, Taggart has increased the Bulls' win total every single season. Taggart and South Florida finished the 2016 season with 10-2 record and a share of the AAC - East title with Temple, the eventual conference champions.

Dungy thinks landing the job at Oregon would be an entirely different task at hand for Taggart than the one he signed up for at South Florida, but one he's confident Taggart will be able to handle.

"Oregon is a different situation," Dungy said. "You're not coming in taking something from the ground floor. You need a coach that can come in and get players going and coach well. It's a big challenge at Oregon, one that he would be successful at. You're not trying to become respectable, you're trying to win national championships - it's a different kind of challenge."
