Report: Cubs have reached out to Daniel Hudson

Allan Henry / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs inked veteran Jon Jay to a one-year contract Tuesday, presumably to replace Dexter Fowler in their outfield, and they're continuing to hunt for ways to improve their already-impressive roster.

Chicago is one of several teams who have been in contact with right-hander Daniel Hudson as they look to shore up their bullpen, reports Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

The 29-year-old Hudson won 16 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks as a starter in 2011, tossing 222 innings, but was converted to a reliever after his second Tommy John surgery in 2013.

Hudson appeared in 133 games in relief over the past two seasons, and made one start, but posted a bloated 5.22 ERA last season, which included more hits (65) than innings pitched (60 1/3).

The Cubs owned one of the National League's top bullpens in 2016, recording a 3.56 ERA, but Aroldis Chapman, Travis Wood, and Trevor Cahill are all free agents, and Mike Montgomery may move into the rotation.

Hudson earned $2.7 million last season and is a free agent for the first time.
