Red Bulls exercise option on Bradley Wright-Phillips, 3 others
The New York Red Bulls announced Monday the club has retained the options for Designated Player star Bradley Wright-Phillips as well as his teammates Sean Davis, Chris Duvall, and Justin Bilyeu.
The club also announced it will not pick up options for defenders Karl Ouimette and Ronald Zubar.
Wright-Phillips won his second MLS Golden Boot award in the 2016 season, notching 24 efforts that set a number of club records, including career goals (69), multi-goal games (16), hat-tricks (4), and game-winning goals (20).
He is one of three finalists for the MLS MVP award, alongside teammate Sacha Kljestan and rival forward David Villa.
Interestingly, Zubar proved an important piece in the Red Bulls' 2016 team, but the club has opted not to pick him up on the option year of his contract.
However, the two parties haven't gone their separate ways just yet.
"We want to thank Karl for his service to the club over the last two years," Red Bulls' sporting director Ali Curtis said in a statement. "Despite not picking up Ronald's option, the club is in discussions to bring him back for next season."
