Report: Alex Guerrero nearing deal in Japan

Gary A. Vasquez / USA TODAY Sports

Once considered one of the best hitters to come out of Cuba, Alex Guerrero's brief stint in the majors appears to be over.

The 30-year-old infielder is close to signing a deal with the Chunichi Dragons of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League, according to J.P. Hoornstra from the Los Angeles Daily News.

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Guerrero to a four-year, $28-million deal in 2013 after he put up impressive numbers in Cuba, hitting .303/.385/.526 and combining to hit 103 home runs and 413 RBIs.

His success overseas didn't translate to the majors, as Guerrero only lasted one full season with the Dodgers, appearing in 108 games in 2015, hitting a measly 233/.261/.434 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs. He was cut by the Dodgers in June, and didn't appear in any major-league games this season.
