Report: Rooney defied Southgate with late-night session

Wayne Rooney's infamous night drinking and partying with wedding goers at the Grove Hotel came after England interim manager Gareth Southgate had told his captain to go to bed, according to Sky Sports News.

The Three Lions' record goalscorer was photographed during an agreed night off for national team players last Saturday, but the 31-year-old's relaxation time rolled into the early hours of the morning and was made public by British tabloid The Sun.

Rooney then apologised "unreservedly" for his behaviour, which fell between a World Cup qualifier win against Scotland last Friday and Tuesday's friendly with Spain, for the "inappropriate" images that sparked controversy and hilarity in equal measure.

There is no suggestion on whether Southgate set a curfew before the evening or tried to call a halt to Rooney's session before he had "bloodshot eyes and red wine-stained lips" and struggled with his balance, The Sun's Jake Ryan and Amy Jones reports.

Rooney subsequently didn't report to England training on Sunday due to a "minor knee injury," and was then sent back to United on Tuesday, as Southgate didn't intend on fielding him in that evening's 2-2 friendly draw with Spain.

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn voiced his disappointment in the situation and his intention to investigate the matter further. And, despite Glenn suggesting he was largely content with how England dealt with its playing representatives, BBC Sport understands that national team nights out have been banned for the foreseeable future.
