Sporting KC confirms Feilhaber's new 2-year deal

Sporting Kansas City has tied down veteran midfielder Benny Feilhaber for the next two seasons, backing up reports the 31-year-old would extend his stay at the MLS club he joined in 2013.

The financial details remain undisclosed, but The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell believes Feilhaber will earn slightly more than the $457,000 mark for Designated Players. He will not, however, fill one of the three DP slots, with Sporting KC using a combination of Targeted and General Allocation Money to buy down his contract.

Under new MLS rules, Feilhaber will be a free agent upon the expiration of the new agreement.

"My family and I are very happy to be staying in Kansas City," he said in a statement. "I have always loved playing in front of our fans and for this city. It's very exciting to be able to stay here for another two years to help this club win more trophies."

Head coach Peter Vermes said it was "our intention all along" to sign Feilhaber to an extension. He was part of the 2013 team that lifted the MLS Cup in extraordinary circumstances, scoring one of the 10 penalty kicks that led to victory over Real Salt Lake at a freezing Sporting Park.

He's compiled 17 goals and accrued 28 assists over the past two seasons, making him one of the most productive MLS players in that span.
