Report: Feilhaber set for new 2-year deal with Sporting KC

Reuters

Sporting Kansas City is reportedly set to sign a new two-year contract with star midfielder Benny Feilhaber, with the agreement currently pending league approval, according to Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star.

Feilhaber, 31, is approaching the end of his current contract with the club and told reporters he was considering other options from clubs overseas, with Sporting KC reportedly rejecting a transfer offer for his services last summer.

The new deal will supposedly see Feilhaber paid above the current threshold for a Designated Player - set at $457,000 in 2016 - but he will not count against one of the club's three available DP slots. Instead, the club could use a combination of General and Targeted Allocation Money to buy down his salary.

It helps, since Sporting KC already has three DPs in Graham Zusi, Matt Besler, and young DP forward Diego Rubio.

Feilhaber has 24 goals and 38 assists in 110 regular-season appearances in the last four years with the club.
