Howard unlikely to feature in Costa Rica trip after in-game injury

Tim Howard's involvement in the Colorado Rapids' bid for a second MLS Cup is in severe jeopardy after the goalkeeper was substituted 40 minutes into the United States' 2-1 World Cup qualifying loss to Mexico on Friday.

His immediate availability for Tuesday's now vital trip to Costa Rica seems unlikely, according to manager Jurgen Klinsmann's diagnosis.

He appeared to suffer an injury when he collapsed after taking a goal kick, and despite his best efforts to continue, he was hauled off for Brad Guzan.

Jurgen Klinsmann's ranks were under pressure when Howard was forced to leave proceedings. The veteran shot-stopper pulled off an excellent save when he tipped Jesus Corona's 10th-minute swerver onto the upright, but eventually conceded when Miguel Layun's 25-yard effort found the corner of the net via a deflection.

Renewed enthusiasm after the break was rewarded when Bobby Wood drew the U.S. level, but veteran defender Rafa Marquez nodded past Guzan for an 89th-minute winner at the MAPFRE Stadium.

Colorado, meanwhile, is set to take on the Seattle Sounders in the first leg of the Western Conference final Nov. 22, with duties between the sticks potentially being left to Zac MacMath if Howard can't be fielded.
