Houston Dynamo won't keep Wade Barrett as full-time coach

The 2016 MLS season is over for the Houston Dynamo, but the club is already looking toward the 2017 campaign, and interim boss Wade Barrett will not be head coach when it begins.

"We're not really making this about Wade and what he did or didn't do," team president Chris Canetti told the Houston Chronicle's Corey Roepken on Wednesday. "This is about where we're at as a club and what we need going forward. It is a timing thing.

"We need an experienced coach and we need to change. The status quo isn't going to work. We feel like we need to infuse new thoughts, new ideas and new energy to take us to where we need to be."

The Dynamo will call on former Chivas USA and U.S. under-17 coach Wilmer Cabrera to take the helm of the club, sources told ESPN FC's Doug McIntyre, but Canetti said the team brass is keen on keeping Barrett within the organization in another capacity.

"We not only value him as a person but also his contributions on the technical side," Canetti said. "We expect Wade will need some time to reflect on what he wants to do. Should he want to remain here the door is wide open."

Barrett took over from Owen Coyle three months into the 2016 season, but the Dynamo still struggled under his tenure and finished last in the Western Conference.

Cabrera could reinvigorate some of the Dynamo's struggling stars, with Mexico striker Erick "Cubo" Torres enjoying his best season in MLS under Cabrera at Chivas USA.
