Roma confirms Florenzi tore ACL in Sassuolo win

The worst news was confirmed in the early hours Thursday morning, as tests revealed Roma midfielder Alessandro Florenzi ruptured the ACL in his left knee during the Giallorossi's 3-1 win at Sassuolo.

The 25-year-old, who will undergo surgery later in the day, will likely miss the majority of the season. The capital club didn't offer an official timetable for his return.

"Thank you all for the support, you are all special, and with the help of my wife, my daughter, my family and friends, these days will pass as quickly as a run down the wing," Florenzi wrote on his Twitter account.

The injury appeared to happen as he broke away from a challenge in Wednesday's game. Seconds later, he collapsed onto the pitch, and required a stretcher to pull him away.

Clearly distressed, manager Luciano Spalletti approached his player and grimaced as he heard Florenzi's account.

"He was squeezing my hand he was in so much pain," Spalletti later told reporters. "We all feel really sorry for him. When something like this happens it takes away all the joy from winning the game. It's not what we needed after a good match."

Roma has dealt with its fair share of ACL problems. Kevin Strootman twice suffered the knee injury over the past couple of years, and Antonio Rudiger missed Euro 2016 with one of his own.

Ironically enough, Rudiger made his comeback Wednesday, emerging as a substitute minutes before Florenzi went down.

His absence will deprive Spalletti of his greatest asset. Having played in defence and midfield, Florenzi has developed a reputation as Roma's utility man.

A regular starter for Italy, he will also miss several World Cup qualifiers.
