Rutgers' timeline of agony vs. Minnesota

2016 has not been kind to the Rutgers football team. Coming into Week 8, the Scarlet Knights were 0-4 in Big Ten play and had been outscored 174-14.

In its game against Minnesota on Saturday, Rutgers provided a roller-coaster ride of highs, lows, and...more lows, as recorded by columnist Steve Politi:

Seemingly poised to tie the game at 24 after Damon Hayes returned an interception for a touchdown, Rutgers instead missed the point-after attempt to trail 24-23. To make matters worse, Minnesota took the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to the house.

Now ahead 31-29 and facing fourth-and-1 on the Rutgers 46-yard line, Minnesota elected to go for it, but the Scarlet Knights stuffed Minnesota's Shannon Brooks, forcing a turnover on downs.

Rutgers would go three-and-out after the change of possession, but Golden Gophers punt returner Drew Wolitarsky fumbled at his own 23-yard line and the Scarlet Knights recovered.

Rutgers would convert the fumble into a 39-yard field goal from David Bonagura to give the Scarlet Knights a one-point lead with 4:01 on the clock.

But in typical 2016 Rutgers fashion, the visitors allowed Minnesota to drive 59 yards on 13 plays in 3:41, resulting in a 28-yard field goal by Emmit Carpenter to hand the Scarlet Knights their fifth straight loss.
