Lakers' Russell: Towns is NBA's best center, behind Mozgov

Gary A. Vasquez / USA TODAY Sports

D'Angelo Russell sticks up for his own.

Though Minnesota Timberwolves center (and Russell's 2015 draft classmate) Karl-Anthony Towns is the toast of basketball, Russell isn't yet ready to anoint him the NBA's best pivot.

Maybe Russell's bitter that Towns was drafted No. 1 last year, leaving him to go No. 2 to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Mozgov, who signed with the Lakers this summer, has looked surprisingly spry in the preseason after a disappointing, injury-marred 2015-16 campaign, but one dunk over Zaza Pachulia (however monstrous it was) does not a league-best center make. Towns has been clowning dudes on the regular.

If Mozgov wants to hold off the hard-charging sophomore, he's got work to do.
