Whitecaps win 2016 Cascadia Cup after 5-goal swing win over Portland
The Vancouver Whitecaps might not be going to the 2016 MLS post-season party, but at least Carl Robinson's side has something to celebrate in the form of the 2016 Cascadia Cup.
Nicolas Mezquida scored the trophy-winning goal as the Whitecaps claimed the cup on superior goal difference:
Team | Points | W-L-D | GD |
---|---|---|---|
Vancouver Whitecaps | 9 | 3-3-0 | +1 |
Portland Timbers | 9 | 3-3-0 | 0 |
Seattle Sounders | 9 | 3-3-0 | -1 |
The margin of victory was quite narrow, and going into the match, Vancouver needed to turn around a five-goal swing to snatch the Northwestern rivalry prize. The Caps did just that, posting a 4-1 win over the Portland Timbers to climb into first in the Cascadia Cup standings.
With a superior goal differential on both Portland and the Seattle Sounders, Vancouver can now celebrate what is really a consolatory piece of silverware, its sixth Cascadia Cup title since 2004 and third in the last four seasons.
While the 2015 Cascadia Cup-winning Sounders won't be pleased to finish last and hand over the trophy, the team can, at least, vie for a bigger prize as Seattle is the only team from this three-club rivalry to qualify for the playoffs in 2016.
