North Carolina loses Peterson, Smith to season-ending injuries

Rafael Suanes-US PRESSWIRE

North Carolina will be without guard Caleb Peterson and linebacker Jonathan Smith for the remainder of the season, as the pair will undergo surgery to repair back and foot injuries.

Peterson, who will undergo surgery on his back Friday, made 30 consecutive starts for the Tar Heels before missing the contest against Virginia Tech two weeks ago. He has started 42 games throughout his North Carolina career.

Smith, who already had surgery to repair a foot injury, was a backup linebacker for the Tar Heels, registering one tackle on the season.

North Carolina travels to Virginia this Saturday in an ACC matchup.
