Celtics' Thomas: Triangle won't work without legendary player

It seems unlikely that Isaiah Thomas will be making his way to the Big Apple when he becomes a free agent in 2018.

The Celtics guard took a jab at the New York Knicks' triangle offense following the his team's preseason victory on Saturday, opining that the system can only work with an all-time great on the roster.

"I just think if you don't have Kobe or Shaq or Michael Jordan, the triangle doesn't work," Thomas told Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

Thomas is far from the first player to question the system's effectiveness, with Rajon Rondo, Emmanuel Mudiay, and Chauncey Billups all voicing their opinions in recent years.

While Thomas may not be the biggest proponent of the triangle, he is a big believer in Jeff Hornacek, his former coach in Phoenix. The 5-foot-9 All-Star admitted that while the triangle may not be the ideal offensive system, Hornacek could still find a way to make it work.

"He'll figure it out, even if he does do it a little bit. I see they're trying to run it every now and then," Thomas said. "I mean, it might work. Just hopefully not against us."

Thomas' Celtics will face New York four times during the upcoming season, with the first matchup taking place on Nov. 11 at TD Garden.
