Toronto FC's Giovinco returns from injury after nearly 2 months out

USA Today

Toronto FC has been boosted by the return of Sebastian Giovinco with just two matches left in the 2016 season, with the Atomic Ant named to the Reds' starting lineup for the 401 Derby against the Montreal Impact.

Giovinco had missed five consecutive matches as he recovered from various muscle strains in his quad and adductor, and returns to take on the Impact almost two months since picking up his injury against this same opponent at the end of August.

Giovinco's season has been somewhat stalled by injuries, and as such, the 2015 MLS Golden Boot winner has fallen out of the race this year, sitting at 16 goals behind David Villa and Bradley Wright-Phillips who have 21 goals each.

In his absence, Jozy Altidore emerged as the Reds' top option. His form and goal-scoring ability helped stave off catastrophe for Toronto, who held on to a series of draws during an extended run of home matches.

With two matches left in the season, Giovinco will look to help the Reds secure a top-two spot in the Eastern Conference, thus securing a first-round playoff bye.
