Report: O'Brien, Osweiler had 'heated exchange' after QB meeting

Frustrations appear to be mounting in Houston.

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien and quarterback Brock Osweiler were involved in a "heated exchange" following a position meeting this past week, a source told Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

The reported blowout comes on the heels of a disappointing five-game stretch to open the season, in which Osweiler's play has been a glaring issue for a Texans offense that was expected to make significant strides. The dispute started when Osweiler objected to some of O'Brien's play calls, according to LaCanfora.

Despite a 3-2 start and the club's first-place standing in the AFC South, the newly signed quarterback guides an offense that ranks 27th in yards per game (310.4) and tied for last in scoring (16.4).

Any sign of a strained relationship between player and coach will cause more critical reflection on the Texans' decision to give Osweiler a four-year, $72-million deal in free agency.

La Canfora cites numerous league sources in reporting that Houston's motivation to hand out the lucrative contract came from the top of the organization as the team looked to solve its long-standing quarterback issues.

It's entirely possible O'Brien was on board with the move, and he's voiced his support of the young quarterback on numerous occasions, but the blockbuster signing has yet to work out as planned.

Many of the limitations Osweiler demonstrated in his mere seven career starts with the Denver Broncos last season have been magnified upon being handed the keys in Houston.

The 25-year-old enters Week 6 action having completed just 58 percent of his passes for 1,133 yards, six touchdowns, seven interceptions, and 11 sacks.
