Giants fire coaches Hayes, Kelly after NLDS collapse

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Following a 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs that ended their even-year World Series streak, the San Francisco Giants are shaking up their coaching staff.

First base coach Bill Hayes and third base coach Roberto Kelly were dismissed from their positions Thursday, the team announced. Hayes spent 17 years in the Giants organization as a coach, while Kelly was entering his ninth year with the team.

"We feel we need to grow our leadership on the field in terms of how we approach our base running and our overall efforts first to third, second to home," general manager Bobby Evans told Alex Pavlovic of CSN. "We want to look at some different leadership there and we feel like we can get stronger."

Evans confirmed that the rest of the team's coaches are expected to return, and wouldn't comment on the possibility of Hayes and Kelly returning in different roles with the team.
