Dombrowski: Ortiz can write his own job title with Red Sox

It was first things first for Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski on Tuesday.

Dombrowski immediately confirmed in his press conference with reporters that John Farrell would return to the club in 2017 as manager, and that Farrell's staff would also be invited back.

This includes bench coach Torey Lovullo, who the club will allow to interview for managerial openings, though the team hopes to retain him.

Perhaps most interesting to Red Sox fans, is that Dombrowski mentioned David Ortiz returning to the team, though he hasn't yet spoken to him about joining the front office or the team staff in any capacity.

"There hasn't been the time for that," Dombrowski said.

"Last night, after the game, when I walked around and he was already off the field, I went and thanked him and hugged him. And vice versa. And I asked him if he was going to be around and he said, 'Yes.' And I said, 'Love to get together with you sometime.' David Ortiz can have a job in this organization any time he wants. He could probably write his job title if he would like."

Former Red Sox players Pedro Martinez, Jason Varitek, and Keith Foulke already fulfill roles within the organization.
