Yankees' pitchers set single-season club strikeout record

Anthony Gruppuso / USA TODAY Sports

This year's version of the New York Yankees' pitching staff has struck out more hitters than any Yankees staff in the past.

Right-hander Michael Pineda struck out Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters in the second inning of Friday's game, giving the staff a club record 1,371 strikeouts.

Coming into the game, the Yankees had 1,370 strikeouts as a team, ranked fifth in the majors and second in the American League.

The bulk of those strikeouts have come from Pineda, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, and Dellin Betances, who have all eclipsed the the 120-strikeout plateau. Pineda is the only Yankees pitcher with more than 200 punch outs.

Pitcher G IP SO
Pineda 31 171 1/3 202
Tanaka 31 199 2/3 165
Sabathia 30 179 2/3 152
Betances 72 72 123

The previous records of 1,370 was set in 2015 and 2014. Prior to that, the record was 1,318, which was set in 2012.
