Report: Vikings want Peterson to finish career in Minnesota

Adrian Peterson may not be done in Minnesota just yet.

Regardless if he returns this season following knee surgery, a monster $18-million cap hit will raise questions as to whether the Vikings can justify bringing him back.

But Minnesota intends to explore opportunities to have Peterson finish his career where it started and retire as a member of the Vikings, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Any arrangement to keep him in Minnesota, Rapoport adds, would almost certainly require a renegotiation and extension of Peterson's contract.

The two sides came to terms on a similar deal when Peterson returned from suspension in 2015, agreeing to a three-year, $42-million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

Peterson agreeing to a new contract would presumably depend upon a level of confidence that he wouldn't receive a better offer elsewhere, but it's possible the Vikings could reward him while also saving some much-needed cap space.

A first-round pick draft in 2007, Peterson has cemented his status as one of the NFL's all-time great runners through nine-plus seasons.

His 2,412 carries for 11,725 yards and 97 touchdowns easily puts him atop the franchise rankings in all major rushing categories.
