Athletics minor leaguer died due to heart condition

Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

The death of Oakland Athletics minor leaguer Sean Murphy in April was the result of a natural heart condition, the Maricopa Medical Examiner's Office said Wednesday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser.

Murphy died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is not an uncommon condition that often goes undiagnosed, according to Slusser.

He didn't pitch in 2014, after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Murphy, who was selected by the Athletics in the 33rd round of the 2010 draft, was 27 years old.
