Report: Ramos not impressed with Nationals' initial offer

The Washington Nationals appear interested in holding on to Wilson Ramos, but negotiations don't seem off to a flying start.

Washington reportedly opened contract talks with its All-Star catcher by presenting him an offer worth approximately three years and $30 million, according to Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball.

That offer apparently wasn't close to what Ramos is seeking, and talks may not reopen until the offseason.

Ramos is reportedly seeking a contract similar to the deals signed by fellow backstops Russell Martin and Brian McCann during the 2014 offseason, Heyman noted. Martin and McCann both signed five-year deals that exceeded $80 million, with the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees, respectively.

Assuming no deal is reached, Ramos will enter free agency coming off a breakout campaign that's seen him reach career highs in multiple categories. The 29-year-old became a first-time All-Star thanks to a .303/.352/.491 slash line with 21 homers and 25 doubles, while his 3.4 WAR ranks fourth among big-league catchers.
