Athletics rescind 3rd inning protest mid-game

The Oakland Athletics temporarily played their Tuesday game against the Houston Astros under protest, after losing their bid at a potential unassisted double play in the third inning.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said after the 2-1 loss in extras that they opted to rescind the protest mid-game.

With Astros outfielder Teoscar Hernandez on first base, center fielder Jake Marisnick followed by laying down a bunt.

Athletics first baseman Yonder Alonso fielded the ball and appeared to tag out Marisnick, who was instead ruled safe on the field. Alonso then turned to Hernandez - who was forced to vacate first - and tagged the outfielder. Believing Marisnick to be out as well, Oakland thought it had turned a double play.

After a lengthy review, however, umpires at Oakland Coliseum ruled that Marisnick was originally out, but Hernandez was therefore safe at first, as he'd left the base due to the incorrect call.

The result prompted the Athletics to declare they were playing the game under protest.
