Despite clean UFC 202 drug test, Diaz facing sanctions for vape pen

Nate Diaz's UFC 202 fight-night drug test may have come back clean, but he's not out of the woods just yet.

According to MMAFighting's Marc Raimondi, the USADA-administered drug test showed no traces of marijuana in the Stockton native's system, but the UFC's anti-doping partner may still discipline him for indulging in cannabidiol oil via vape pen at the post-fight press conference.

Cannabinoids are only prohibited in-competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency, but Diaz's alleged infraction occurred minutes after losing a majority decision to Conor McGregor, well within the allotted six-hour window. Diaz was forthcoming in detailing his use of the substance at the presser, claiming it "helps with the healing process and inflammation." The confession could correlate with the UFC's anti-doping "admission clause."

Given that cannabis – and by association, its derivatives – is one of the promotional policy's "specified substances," potential sanctions range from a public warning to a year-long suspension.

The Nevada Athletic Commission is not investigating Diaz's case, since its definition of in-competition does not include the six-hour window.

According to UFC vice president of athlete health and performance Jeff Novitzky, every fight-night drug test administered at UFC 202 came back clean.
